Safe Interaction Program

This research project is bigger than we think. As we embark upon this journey to uncover the lives and stories of the 313+, we are unable to fully articulate the magnitude of this work.  Take the Safe Interaction Program of Elizabeth. During one of our 313+ Ancestor Video Blog series, one of the residents of Elizabeth, the Chief of Police, a strong supporter of our work, was on the call as well. The Safe Interaction Program is the result of that interaction.

The Safe Interaction Program (SIP) is an advocacy program implemented by the Elizabeth Police Department to build on our existing relationship alongside people with special needs and their loved ones. The purpose of the program is to help caregivers and individuals whom are adversely affected by a disability to enhance the quality of search-and-rescue response and interactions with members of law enforcement. The program provides educational resources and training that helps us create a trusting and safe relationship with our special needs community.

Becoming a participant of the program includes:

  1. SIP personalized identification card
  2. Personal interaction with police officers
  3. Virtual Reality training experience
  4. Hands-on practice for police/emergency responder interaction
  5. SIP lanyard
  6. SIP silicon bracelet
  7. Educational resources for caregivers
  8. Building tour of the Elizabeth Police Department
